What is PM?
Particulate matter (PM) suspended in the air is a pollutant that contributes to the reduction of air quality. The “PM10” designation refers to the particles of materials which have a diameter of 10 microns or less. In comparison, a human hair has a diameter of about 50 to 100 microns. While larger diameter particles settle faster on the ground, PM10, due to their low weight and size, can remain suspended and airborne for weeks.
Exposure to PM10 concentrations can cause a host of health problems in the population. Children, the elderly and people with respiratory and allergic problems are particularly sensitive. Other pollutants already in the air can combine with suspended PM, thus creating additional health risks both in urban and rural areas.
